Position ESR13:Determining the role of the locus coeruleus projection to the
hippocampus in chronic pain. Focus on sex differences
ESR13 position aims to determine that chronic pain leads a dysregulation in noradrenergic LC
transmission to the hippocampus which may be critical in the appearance of stress-related
disorders and cognitive alterations in chronic pain.
1/ To investigate sex difference in the development of sensory hypersensitivity and secondary
disorders (depression, anxiety and cognitive impairment) related to chronic pain. Behavioural and
immunohistochemistry approaches.
2/ To study the effect of optogenetic/chemogenetic manipulation of LC neuros projecting to the
hippocampus on sensory hypersensitivity and secondary disorders related to chronic pain.
3/ To evaluate changes in neurotrophins system in the hippocampus in conditions of chronic pain
and after the manipulation of the LC neurons.

Academic Degree2:
Hold a Master´s degree in relevant scientific disciplines, e.g. neuroscience, biomedicine,
pharmacology, medicine.
Good/excellent academic performance.

Knowledge on specific topics

Knowledge in pain and/or mood disorders
Technical skills
o Demonstrate previous experience in a research laboratory (e.g. basic wet lab methods)
Considered as advantage:
o Experimental animal course completed
o Experience in animal surgery, in vivo pharmacology, animal (rodents) behavior, molecular
biology, inmunodetection, microscopy, statistical data analysis
To be included in the doctorate program (University of Cadiz), candidates must fulfil the criteria
established in the doctorate program in their current institution. Usually, a completed course requires at
least 300 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are second-cycle (Master
Degree).
